Baby bath time tips

The idea of giving your baby their first bath might seem a little daunting. What if the water’s too hot, what if it’s too cold, will they like it? Well, don’t worry. They’ve spent a cushy 9 months in the womb, so they already have a natural affinity with the water. The warmth is a familiar feeling, so there really is no better way to relax them. And it’s a brilliant bedtime ritual too. They’ll be catching Zs in no time. You don’t need to give your baby a bath every day, but if they’re loving the water then why not?

Temperature of the water

Keep the water nice and shallow (about 20-30cm), and at a safe temperature (between 36-38 degrees celsius). Use a thermometer to check the temperature, or if you swim with us you can always use the Bubba thermometer from your Welcome pack. It’s also a good idea to test it with your elbow and wrist too for any hot patches; it should feel comfortably warm.

Have everything to hand

It’s best to be prepared; you’re going to have your hands full while bathing your baby. Have at the ready:

  • A non-slip mat in front of the bath to avoid any nasty accidents happening.
  • A snuggly towel at the ready to wrap them up in afterwards.
  • A soft washcloth.

Bath time is bonding time

Why not share the bath with your baby? Skin-to-skin contact is a wonderful way to bond and having you in the tub with them will help them feel more content. Lie back with them on your chest, making sure their body is fully submerged. Massaging their arms and legs will help keep them calm. Maintaining eye contact with them and chattering away also reassures them that it’s a safe place to be. Giving them a feed in the bath will also help them associate the water with comfort.

Toys are a wonderful way to fuel imaginative play in the bath and distract from any worries. You can take a peek at some of the fun products we stock in our shop.

Why not warm up those vocal cords and try singing along too? If you’re already swimming with us, why not sing those Water Babies songs for that familiarity?

There really is nothing to worry about at bath time. And the more time your baby spends in the water, the more confident and content they'll become. Happy bathing!
